My summer transformation

I thought it appropriate that I allow my devoted followers to view my before and after portraits. As I said before, I do look ghastly with my shorn locks. But I can tell you that I so enjoyed my time on the porch this afternoon. All my companions were panting and frowning as they sweltered in the heat. Ha!  I was cool as the cucumbers that Lady G. is growing by that atrocious cactus in the front yard. I know a thing or two about landscaping. And while I heartily approve of the herb garden, the cactus is an affrontery. She did imply that she too despised it, but Father Daniel insisted that it stay. That is the ONLY disappointment I have had with him. I suppose I can rise above this slight. He is, after all,  the fellow that keeps my fanny nice and tidy.

  1. So you don't think I look ghastly?? I don't think I am up to my usual dapper standards, but the heat is too oppressive to get too bothered about it.

  2. At last, we are able to communicate -- and it is thanks to one of your servants, Giny, who kindly stopped by my house to give me computer advice (confession: she did it all). I am pleased to be one of your admiring followers for a variety of reasons. First, as an Anglophile, my ears respond to the very British tone of your communications. In addition, I am very fond of your servants, though I understand that one of them recently deserted you, thus proving that she (gasp) loves someone more than she does you. Unspeakable.

I look forward to keeping up with your activities over the coming months, and I must say that I don't find your summer style at all "ghastly." On the contrary, your new look is quite slimming and remarkably chic. Your servants have, in this case, at least, done you a service.

I do hope you are able to enjoy the upcoming weekend without too much hassle from the felines that surround you and, I'm sure, must be annoying to you. Be strong.

  3. Dear Claire,
Thank you for your kind remarks on my appearance; you have bolstered my spirits tremendously. I will also take your advice on staying the course with feline hoi poloi. I do have my background and position to think of, you know. I do need to make one correction in your response, however, and state that the inhabitants of Porter Manor, Father Daniel and Lady Ginty are my gracious and gentried caregivers. I depend on their many kindnesses as my circumstances are not what they once were....

  5. Oh, my apologies. I should have known better. Having been on the receiving end of the gracious hospitality and frequent kindnesses of the couple, I should not have given them the humiliating moniker of "servants." My recent experience, however, with assisted living facilities has made me think somewhat unkindly of "caregivers," and this must have slipped unconsciously into my verbage. Apologies to them and a nod of admiration to you for pointing this out, rather than letting me view you as somehow superior to those who have offered you shelter, food, and comforts.

Your story sounds to me very much like those told in literary pieces of the past: a young unfortunate, taken in as a ward or even as a member of the family. Perhaps you should recount to your admirers the trials you experienced on the way to your new life among the landed gentry -- unless such a task would bring on remembered sorrows and travails which you would prefer not to revisit. Just a thought. I'm sure you could teach many lessons to those who believe they are suffering but do not really understand the true suffering you may have undergone on your way to Porter Estates.

    Just a thought.

    I remain your faithful correspondent,
    Claire

  6. Someone in the world of this mail-by-air claims my last note to you was sent at 10:21PM. Would it were so, as it is almost 1:30 in the morning. Whose clock is wrong? I like to have an accurate accounting of these things.

  7. I have noted that I,too, seem to be unstuck in blogtime. I know not the explanation.

  8. Well, if it's two of us, I'm determined to feel okay about it. Time is, after all, relative.
